2008 Softball Information

Dear Fellow Officials,

I welcome you to NCOA Softball, and look forward to working with you to develop or hone your already- existing umpiring skills in anticipation of a great 2008 Softball season.

You will find that the umpires in our Group are almost all easy to work with and eager to assist in your growth as an official.  Please know that we look forward to any questions which you might have about anything, so kindly keep us abreast of any difficulties which you encounter.

High school softball games are usually on weekdays, beginning at 3:30 or 3:45. Umpires are expected to arrive on a field about 20 minutes prior to the start of a game.  Our Association works games from Davis to Yuba City to Galt to Placerville.  Although it is difficult to be able to commit to all sites, you must be able to reach at least some of these sites by 3:10 to be able to work for NCOA.

NCOA's heirarchy is democratic and responsive to the needs of our umpires.  I am the Group Leader, and responsible for the overall direction of the Softball Group; the Instructional Committee develops and implements lesson plans for general meetings, outdoor and indoor clinics, and scrimmages; the Rating Committee provides guidelines for evaluation of skills and ultimately advancement to a higher schedule of games, and an Ombudesman who is responsible for giving individual advice or advocacy to any who feel  they have unmet individual needs.

Our Group goals from our first meeting on January 28th to about March 1st are to prepare our officials for real games, so we try to make our instruction as realistic as possible as often as possible.  As a new, or even as a 15-year returning veteran, in NCOA our umpires are expected to attend the various meetings, clinics, and scrimmages, where we do as  much "hands-on" training as possible.  After March, we limit our meetings and concentrate on fine-tuning our skills in the 2 1/2 months of actual varsity and JV softball games.

As a new official to NCOA, please understand that these various events are designed for all of our officials, but particularly for umpires new to NCOA, so take advantage of the many opportunities presented by our group to best prepare you for the live fire in March.

Our first meeting is set for 6:00 on January 28, at Rio Tierra Middle School, where a vendor can provide you with equipment.  The next softball meeting is on February 4th, at 6:00, also at Rio Tierra.  Further locations and times for the other instructional meetings, scrimmages, and clinics will be announced later.

Dues are $50, and can be paid to Tom Murphy, our NCOA Secretary, at either of the first two meetings.

Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing you on January 28th.  I am

Sincerely Yours,
John Morrisroe
Softball Group Leader
